RESOLUTION 2002-068
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, IN SUPPORT OF BUILDING A NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL
WHEREAS, the Seward Middle School was built in 1968; and
WHEREAS, the Kenai Peninsula Borough conducted a code compliance review estimating
the cost to bring Seward Middle School into compliance with the 2000 IBC Building Code, to
upgrade building standards to current building standards in Alaska and to cover the cost of portable
classrooms for two years while the building is under repairs to be approximately $10,700,100; and
WHEREAS, those improvements would only extend the life expectancy of the existing
middle school by ten years; and
WHEREAS, the Seward Site Council is in support of building a new school to house
displaced students that would result from demolishing the middle school; and
WHEREAS, the Seward Site Council would like to continue to use the middle school while
building the new school and save the estimated $2,873,800 it would cost to use portable classrooms.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The Seward City Council is in support of building a new school for Seward area
students.
Section 2. The Seward City Council supports the use of the current middle school during
construction.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council ofthe City of Seward, Alaska, this 22 day
of July, 2002.
