HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes2008-092Sponsored by: Oates CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2008-092 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD ~- ALASKA, AUTHORIZIG THE CITY MANAGER TO ACCEPT THE ALASKA HIGHAY SAFETY OFFICE HIGHWAY SAFETY GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $17,960 FOR THE PURCHASE OF A "RADAR/MESSAGE TRAILER" WHEREAS, the Seward Police Department has been awarded the Alaska Highway Safety Office, Highway Safety Grant in the amount of $17,960.00; and WHEREAS, the Grant Agreement requires Council acceptance; and WHEREAS, there are no matching funds to accept this grant; and WHEREAS, these funds will be used to purchase "Radar/Message Trailer"; and WHEREAS, the Police Department wishes to reduce the incidents of speeding violations in the Seward; and WHEREAS, the preliminary part of the program is to show the public how fast they arc actually traveling and encourage them to travel the posted speed limit. NOW, THEREFORE, BE 1T RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA that: Section 1. The City of Seward accepts the Alaska Highway Safety Office Highway Safety grant in the amount of $17,960.00 from State grant account no. 101-0000-4680-0200 to fund the purchase of a "Radar/Message Trailer" to account no. 101-1210-5930 and proceeding with this project on October 1, 2008. Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption. PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward, Alaska, this 22"`~ day of September, 2008. BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION: The City of Seward, Seward Police Department, submitted a Highway Safety grant to purchase a "Radar/Message Trailer". The Alaska Highway Safety Office (AHSO) has approved the grant application and we have received a letter to proceed with the project beginning October 1, 2008. This piece of equipment will help slow down speeders on our roads and in school zones by alerting speeders of how fast they are driving. "Radar/Message Trailers" have been proven to slow traffic, therefore making streets and neighborhoods safer. "Radar/Message Trailers" were designed to reduce the incidence of speeding violations in a community and have been very successful. The total project cost is $1.7,960.00. The grant amount is not to exceed $17,960.00 other than some in-kind services there is no match needed by the city. CONSISTENCY CHECKLIST: Where applicable, this resolution is consistent with the Seward City Code, Charter, Comprehensive Plans, Land Use Plans, Strategic Plan and City Council Rules of Procedures. FISCAL NOTE: The City of Seward accepts the Alaska Highway Safety Office Highway Safety grant in the amount of $17,960.00 from State grant account no. 101-0000-4680-0200 to fund the purchase of a "Radar/Message Trailer" to account no. 101.-1210-5930 and proceeding with this project on October 1, 2008. RECOMMENDATION: City Council approve resolution 2008- accepting the Alaska Highway Safety Office Highway Safety grant in the amount of $17,960.00, and appropriating those funds. ~~
