HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes2009-031Sponsored ny: Oates CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2009-031 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THF, CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, SUPPORTING THE SEWARD POLICE DEPAR'TMENT'S "RF,COVERY ACT: ASSISTANCE TO RURAL LAW ENFORCEMENT TO COMBAT CRI1~7E AND DRUGS: CATEGORY I: COMBATING RURAL CRIME" APPLICATION IN THE AMOUNT OF 575,000 FOR TRAFFIC RADAR ENFORCEMENT EQUIPMENT ANll DIGITAL DASH CAMERAS WHEREAS, The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 is intended by Congress to stimulate the American economy; and WHEREAS, appropriations have been made to federal agencies through the ARRA in order to help stimulate local economics: and WHEREAS, ARRA presents the City of Seward and Seward Police Department with the opportunity to apply for granted funding, with no match required; and WHEREAS, $2 billion in Recovery Act 2009 funding allocations for state and local law enforcement assistance is available lhrottgh the Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Crant (JAG) Programs; and WHEREAS, radars for traffic enforcement and digital dash cameras would help etiltance the Police officer's and public's safety; and WHEREAS, the Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Assistance to Rural Law Enforcement to Combat Crime and Drugs Competitive Grant prograrn includes $125 million in funding available through competitive grants; and WHF,REAS, the Recovery Act: Assistance to Rural Category L Combating Rural Crime grant application is due on April 22, 2009. NOW 'THERF,FORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: Section 1: 'The Seward City Council recognizes the need for new traffic radar equipment and digital dash cameras to enhance public and Police officer safety. CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2009-03I Section 2: The Seward City Council supports the Seward Police Departments' application through the Department Justice, Office of Juslice Program, and Assistance to Rural Law Enforcement to Combat Crime and Drugs Competitive Grant for 575,000. Section 3: This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward Alaska this day 13°i day of April, 2009. Available funding presents the Seward Police Department with the opportunity to apply for a grant of $75,000 for purchase of Hint Trattic Enforcement Radar Units and Digital Dash Cameras, equipment used during traffic enforcement work and general policing situations. If awarded this grant will help improve officer efficiency and enhance public safety, focusing on Intelligence Led Policing (ILP) and Community Oriented Policing (COP), both practices strongly encouraged in application instructions. No match is required for this grant. Nationwide the Department of Justice, includes $125 mi]lion in funding available through competitive grants.
