HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes2009-032Sponsored by: Oates CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2009-032 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, SUPPORTING THE SF,WARD POLICE DEPARTMENT'S "RECOVERY ACT: ASSISTANCE, TO RURAL LAW ENFORCEMENT TO COMBAT CRIME, AND llRUGS: CATEGORY IV: FACILITATING RURAL JUSTICE INFORMATION SHARING "APPLICATION IN 'I'IIE AMOUNT OF $170,000 FOR THE PURCIiASE OF A DIGITAL STORAGE UNIT, PROGRAMMING, NF,TWORKING, AND iVIOBILE DATA TERMINALS WHEREAS, The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 is intended by Congress to stimulate the American economy; and WHEREAS, appropriations have been made to federal agencies through the ARRA in order to help stimulate local economies: and WHEREAS, ARRA presents the City of Seward and Seward Police Department with the opportunity to apply for granted funding, with no match required; and "- WHERF,AS, $2 billion in Recovery Act 2009 finding allocations for state and local law enforcement assistance is available through the Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Programs; and WHERF,AS, the Seward Police Department has no integrated digital system capable of storage and communication both within the department and with cooperating law enforcement agencies; and, WHEREAS, the Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Assistance to Rural Law Enforcement to Combat Crime and Drugs Competitive Grant program includes $125 million in funding available through competitive grants; and WHEREAS, the Recovery Act: Assistance to Rural Law Enforcement to Combat Crime and Drugs: category IV: Facilitating Rural Justice Information Sharing grant application is due on April 22, 2009. NOW THEREFORE BF, IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE. CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2009-032 Section 1: The Seward City Council recognizes the need for Seward Police Dcparlment to be digitally capable and interactive, both with storage of information and communications between agencies. Section 2: The Seward City Council supports the Seward Police Department's application through the Department Justice, Office of Justice Program, and Assistance to Rural Law Enforcement to Combat Crime and Drugs Competitive Grant for $170,000. Section 3: This resohition shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward Alaska this day 13`" day of April, 2009. This grant program is specifically geared toward helping police departments to upgrade technologically and become interactive throughout states and nationwide. $2 billion in Recovery Act 2009 funding allocations for state and local law enforcement assistance is available through the Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Program. The City of Seward and Seward Police Department have the opportunity to apply for this grant funding, with no match required.
