Home My WebLink AboutRes2009-010 Sponsored by: Port and Commerce Advisory Board _ CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2009 -010 A RESOLUTION OF THE PORT AND COMMERCE ADVISORY BOARD IN SUPPORT OF HOME - PORTING THE ALASKA REGION RESEARCH VESSEL IN SEWARD. WHEREAS, Seward is positioned to serve as the hub ifAlaskan research through combined efforts of the Alaska SeaLife Center, Alutiiq Pride Shellfish Hatchery, and the Seward Marine Center: and WHEREAS, Seward is the logical choice for home - porting of the Alaska Region Research Vessel, as it is strategically positioned in south central Alaska with in the protection of Resurrection Bay; and WHEREAS, supplies and equipment can easily reach the vessel, as Seward is on the road system with access to the railroad, a deep draft port and freight dock, and a local air port and WHEREAS, stationing the ARRV in Seward will contribute to the year round economy with additional jobs and support services for the vessel; and WHEREAS, the presence of the ARRV in Seward will provide our students a tangible example of the importance of math and science career fields, and will provide a valuable conduit for marine students pursuing marine training programs at the University and the Alaska Vocational Technical Center; and WHEREAS, Seward offers a cost effective location for ARRV operations and maintenance; and WHEREAS, Seward has historically been home port to this activity; and WHEREAS, home porting the ARRV in Seward is consistent the City's Comprehensive and Strategic Plans. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA that: Section 1. The Seward Port and Commerce Advisory Board respectfully requests that the Seward City Council adopt a resolution stating the City's support of home- porting the Alaska Region Research Vessel in Seward. Section 4. This resolution shall take affect immediately upon its adoption. PASSED AND APPROVED by the Port and Commerce Advisory Board of the city of Seward, Alaska, this 21'' day of October, 2009.
