Agenda Item: Revision and Updates of Priorities and Grant Projects
BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION:
Every year the Seward Historic Preservation Commission reviews and updates their
priorities list and discusses ideas for future grants.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
This is an on -going process of review and revisions. Prioritize and update SHPC
Priorities List and CLG grant application ideas.

Priorities List 2011
Public Outreach
1. Historic Preservation Website- Continual updating, work on the Seward Register
Sites
2. National Historic Preservation Month- Continue to participate and plan celebrations
for the recognition of H.P. Month. The scope of the activities will vary from year to
year, but activity needs to be identified many months in advance.
a. The month of May is Historic Preservation Month
b. Place the National Historic Preservation Month on the January Agenda
3. Seward Annual Historic Preservation Award- Continue to solicit candidates.
a. The Historic Preservation award may be given in May.
b. Place the Seward Annual Historic Preservation Award on the January Agenda.
c. Solicit the public to nominate people they think deserve to be a recipient of
the award.
d. Update City plaque as appropriate.

a. Inventory of Local Plants and Trees

5. The First Friday Fireside Historical Lecture Series -
a. August meeting agenda item to set up work session to brainstorm program

1. Hoben Park has been approved for historic reconstruction by Council

local area, compatible with the Alaska Heritage Resources Survey and

resources within the community.
3. Set priorities for grant applications.

Call to Order
The October 12, 2011 regular meeting of the Seward Historic Preservation Commission was
called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Chair Linda Lasota.
Opening Ceremony
Commissioner Heim led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Roll Call
There were present: Chair Linda Lasota presiding, and
John French Patricia Heim
Catherine Richardson Doug Capra
Absent Commissioners were Monica Hinders (excused) and Ryan Reynolds.
Comprising a quorum of the Commission, and
Amy Carney, Library /Museum staff

Other Reports, Announcements & Presentations
Commissioner Capra was welcomed into the Commission.
Friends of the Jesse Lee Home Update
Richardson had not spoken recently with anyone from administration recently. They felt that
they were through Phase 1. Now they were working on site control in order to achieve Phase 2.
Meanwhile, they were actively fund- raising. On the academic /school aspect, there is nothing further
being done. Their status as a legal entity had lapsed. Richardson stated that not much has changed
since the last report. However, the Friends of the Jesse Lee Home are currently negotiating with the
City of Seward about site control, and whether to maintain ownership of property.
Commissioner Heim added that it did appear to be a long -term project.
Website Updates & Historical Site Inventory

Reynolds reported that there are no website updates. Concerning the inventory, Lasota
reported that she is still plugging away at entering the inventory data.
Photos for CLG Grant 2008 — Chair Lasota
Lasota reported that Reynolds is uploading photos into the website.
Cemetery Headstones for CLG Grant 2011— All Commissioners
Lasota reported that she and Commissioner Richardson still had a row of headstones in
Woodlawn to take pictures of. She also wanted to re -take some photos. Richardson mentioned that
there is a website with listings in alphabetical order.

Informational Items
Capra mentioned that, in October 2013, the Alaska Historical Society/Museums Alaska Joint
Conference will be in Seward. He suggested that the HPC add that to a future agenda.
Commission Comments
Capra said that it was a pleasure to be back and looks forward to working with everyone for
the next few years. Heim welcomed Capra to the HPC. French welcomed Capra back to the
Commission. He said that he is happy to see a full commission again and thankful that the FY2012
grant came together came together quickly with the help of Linville and Chair Lasota. Lasota said
that she is excited that in December 2012 the Commission will be presenting to the community, and
recommended that they start planning ahead of time!
