HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes2016-048 Sponsored by: Casagranda CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2016-048 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, ADOPTING A DESIGN FOR AN OFFICIAL SEWARD CITY FLAG WHEREAS, in 1982 the City of Seward conducted a public logo design contest, and the winning design was adopted as the official city logo; and WHEREAS, in January, 2016 a group of citizens composed of historians, educators, council members, and professionals formed the Seward City Flag Committee (SCFC) to create an official city flag; and WHEREAS, on March 14, 2016, the Seward City Council passed Resolution 2016-027 in support of the SCFC conducting a flag design contest, and overseeing the selection and unveiling of a new official City of Seward flag; and WHEREAS, the SCFC launched a flag design contest and invited all school-aged children from Seward and the surrounding area to submit design entries; and WHEREAS, on April 15, 2016, the flag design submission period ended and resulted in 358 entries, from which the judging panel chose their top seven designs; and WHEREAS, on June 23, 2016, the judging panel unanimously selected the final graphic design rendition based upon the design submitted by Katelyn Correa from Moose Pass; and WHEREAS, the flag will officially be raised for the first time at Seward's Founders Day Celebration on August 28, 2016. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA that: Section 1. The flag design concept submitted by Katelyn Correa and graphically rendered in its final form attached hereto is hereby adopted as the official Seward City Flag. Section 2. The Seward City Flag Committee will purchase a flag with the new design, and the flag will officially be raised for the first time at Seward's Founders Day Celebration on August 28, 2016. Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption. PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward, Alaska, this 25th day of July, 2016. Alaska is thought of to be snowy and cold so that's why there's the white. And the blue represents the sky and the color of the Alaska flag along with the star. -Katelyn Correa
