HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes2004-031 I I I Sponsored by: Clerk CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2004-31 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, SUPPORTING THE LIFE ALASKA TILE PROJECT WHEREAS, Life Alaska is the organ and tissue donation agency serving the State of Alaska; and WHEREAS, Life Alaska maintains the statewide organ and tissue donor registry and is a non-profit corporation; and WHEREAS, Erin Hall-Meade of Life Alaska spoke with the City Council on February 23rd and explained the success of this public art project in other areas; and WHEREAS, this public art tile project would be an outreach program that would promote public awareness and be a visible and constant reminder to donate; and WHEREAS, The Seward ceramics class instructor Ms. Olver would like to do this as a spring project, provide the blank tiles, firing and glazing; and WHEREAS, Life Alaska Donor Services would work with the students to select appropriate designs that are pro-donation, and find a sponsor within the community who would assist with any maintenance; and WHEREAS, upon completion the city would find a public location to mount and install the final tiles; and WHEREAS, Life Alaska can show a direct correlation between increased public awareness of the facts and myths of organ and tissue donation, and the number of donors each year. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: Section 1. The city of Seward supports this concept and project. Section 2, The only cost to the city would be for installation of the tiles, and the responsibility of finding an appropriate location. Section 3, This resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward, Alaska, this 22nd day of March 2004. 'I"~, -S- OF p..\. ,~..'\i ""IIi1Ua'\ Agenda Statement Meeting Date: March 22, 2004 From: Jean Lewis Agenda Item: Life Alaska Tile Project BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION: Erin Hall-Meade, Community Development Coordinator of Life Alaska which is a non- profit corporation that maintains the statewide organ and tissue donor registry, gave a presentation on a tile project before Council on February 23. rd Life Alaska Donor Services and Ms. Olvers ceramics class will be working together to ’ design the tiles and coordinate other logistics associated with this project, such as maintenance needs. Council supported this project. The city would assist in the installation of these tiles, and aid in the finding of an appropriate spot for public display.
