RESOLUTION 2002-079
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, DIRECTING THE ADMINISTRATION TO EXPLORE THE
PURCHASE OF A FIRE/RESCUE/HOMELAND SECURITY BOAT WITH
THE CAPABILITIES NEEDED TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE PROTECTION
FOR THE MARINE AREA AND SAFETY TO THE VOLUNTEER
FIREFIGHTERS
WHEREAS, In 1985 the Fire and Harbor Departments explored the possibility of purchasing
a FirelRescueIHomeland Security Vessel as a result of several boat fires and the anticipated growth
ofthe Seward Small Boat Harbor; and
WHEREAS, the estimated cost far exceed the financial capabilities ofthe City at that time;
and
WHEREAS, recent events have demonstrated again the need for a vehicle to provide
fire/rescue capabilities for all those who use the Small Boat Harbor and adjoining areas; and
WHEREAS, the anticipated growth of the harbor, additional traffic expected to utilize the
dock system, i.e., fuel barges for the oil storage and transfer facility, the number of day cruisers,
cruise ships and charter fishing vessels that use the harbor and surrounding areas.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA that:
Section 1. The Administration is directed to research the capabilities needed for FirelRescuel
Homeland Security Vessel, to draw up specifications for procurement and solicit price quotes from
vendors.
Section 2. The Administration is directed to investigate various means to fund this project
via grant opportunities or capital lease purchase for fiscal year 2002 or fiscal year 2003.
Section 3. The Administration is directed to bring all information back to Council with their
recommendation for approval of the purchase of the FirelRescuel Homeland Security Vessel.
Section 4. This resolution shall take affect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this 12th day of
August, 2002.
