RESOLUTION 2002-062
"
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, SUPPORTING SEWARD TERMINAL INC.'S CONTRACT
NEGOTIATIONS TO EXPORT COAL
WHEREAS, many Alaskan jobs are dependent on our coal production in Healy and
its transportation by the Alaska Railroad to the Port of Seward; and
WHEREAS, Seward Terminal, Inc. has provided year round, full-time employment
for Alaskans in Seward, Anchorage and Healy since 1984; and
WHEREAS, fifty-eight percent of Seward Terminal Inc.'s employees have been solidly
employed for more than 10 years, and twenty-five percent more than 17 years; and
WHEREAS, Seward Terminal, Inc. is one of the few industries in Seward that is not
government or tourist related, providing their employees sufficient compensation for a
comfortable standard of living for their families; and
WHEREAS, Seward Terminal Inc. not only contributes stability and economic
diversity to Seward's tax base, but its employees support local businesses, schools, health care
and community events.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The City of Seward support Seward Terminal Inc. in their contract
negotiations to export coal.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward, Alaska, this
24th day of June, 2002.
