HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes2001-093 I I I Sponsored by: Staff CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2001-093 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, AUTHORIZING THE USE OF LOT lOA, FORT RAYMOND SUBDMSION, (SOUTH OF SEALION DRIVE, BElWEEN DIMOND BLVD. AND THE SEWARD HIGHWAY) FOR THE PURPOSE OF RECEIVING APPROXIMATELY 20,000 YARDS OF FILL FROM THE RESURRECTION RIVER STOCKPILE WHEREAS, a fire station on the north end of the city would benefit the community by 1) providing better protection to those residents north of the lagoon especially in the event the Seward Highway would become impassable, 2) distribute fire fighting equipment and apparatus currently housed at the fire hall to another location in the community, rather than having them housed in the one facility, 3) provide the needed fire protection for any airport or industrial area expansion; and WHEREAS, the City of Seward owns Lot lOA Fort Raymond Subdivision, which is in an ideal location for a fire station, training site and general storage area for the City ; and WHEREAS, the lot is too low in relationship to the Seward Highway for this type of use and cost of fill has been prohibitive; and WHEREAS, the City of Seward has the responsibility of removing dredged material from the Resurrection River Flood Hazard Mitigation Project by October of2001; and WHEREAS, the fill is considered free of contaminates and appropriate for use as construction fill; and WHEREAS, the Bike Path Task Force has selected Sealion Drive to be the location of the bike path extension, the fill material may improve the grade for the proposed extension and will give a "staging area" until the construction of 0-8 Seward Highway bike path; and WHEREAS, authorizing the clearing of this property and using the fill material to bring the lot up to the level of the Seward Highway, will not commit the council to building a fire station; and WHEREAS, completing the clearing and fill work will reduce the cost toJhe city when they do go forward with construction of any facility at this location; .. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA. Section 1. Authorizing the use of Lot lOA, Fort Raymond Subdivision, (South of Seal ion Drive, between Dimond Blvd. and the Seward Highway) for the purpose of receiving approximately 20,000 yards offill from the Resurrection River Stockpile.
