HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes2001-133 I I I Sponsored by: Janke CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2001-133 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, SUPPORTING THE ALASKA SEALIFE CENTER'S STATE OF ALASKA MINI-GRANT APPLICATION WHEREAS, the City of Seward is a community with quality educational resources and facilities that provide academic and personal growth opportunities for citizens of aU ages, with a vision that includes integrating the Seward public schools, University of Alaska, Institute of Marine Science, Alaska Vocational Technical Center, Alaska SeaLife Center, and other such facilities, to maximize resources; and WHEREAS, the Seward Education Initiative is a community-based group working to improve the educational opportunities for Seward-area residents, with a goal of creating a community that values life-long learning; and WHEREAS,the need for the Seward Education Initiative grew from a community concern that the children of Seward had decreasing access to a variety of educational and experiential opportunities; and WHEREAS, the Seward Education Initiative wishes to achieve improved educational opportunities for the populace of Seward by increasing the number of advanced placement and elective courses, apprenticeships for high school students at natural resource agencies, increased number of extracurricular activities (e.g., a marine science and other specialty clubs), and exchange or travel programs with other facilities and communities; and WHEREAS, the State of Alaska Department of Community and Economic Development has a grant program offering up to $30,000 for projects that support community economic and development strategies; and WHEREAS, the Alaska SeaLife Center is submitting a grant application to the Alaska Department of Community and Economic Development to further the goals of the Seward Education Initiative; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: Section 1. The Seward City Council supports the Alaska SeaLife Center's State of Alaska Department of Economic Development Mini-Grant application and their effort to assist the Seward Education Initiative to further its goals. CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2001-133 Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
