RESOLUTION 2001-138
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, SETTING ADOPTION FEES AND DEPOSITS FOR ANIMALS
ADOPTED FROM THE AllCE PICKETI' MEMORIAL ANIMAL SHELTER
WHEREAS, the City of Seward through the Chief of Police and others designated by the
Chief of Police are committed to providing animal control services within the City of Seward; and
WHEREAS~t is in the public interest to promote the adoption of unredeemed animals held
at the Alice Pickett Memorial Animal Shelter; and
WHEREAS, with the adoption of Ordinance 2001-06, the City Council determined that it
is in the public interest to permit an adoption fee schedule that may differ from the impoundment fees
described in City Code Section 9.05.262; and
WHEREAS, with the adoption of Ordinance 2001-06, the City Council allowed for the
adoption fees and deposits to be set by resolution; and
WHEREAS,the community of Seward is experiencing an overpopulation of unwanted and
unclaimed animals at the Alice Pickett Seward Animal Shelter; and
WHEREAS, most animal shelters in the United States have embraced the practice of
collecting a deposit to ensure that all prospective adopters sterilize their new pets; and
WHEREAS,the procedure sterilizing domestic animals is considered proper animal care with
benefits extending beyond preventing unwanted pregnancies, such as reduced aggression and
roarmng;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. Everyone adopting animals from the Alice Pickett Seward Animal Shelter shall
be required to pay an adoption fee and deposit, and the deposit shall be refunded upon compliance
with an adoption contract that requires all animals to be spayed or neutered and anti rabies
vaccinated,
Section 2. The City Council adopts the following adoption fee and deposit schedule for the
Alice Pickett Memorial Animal Shelter:

FEMALE DOGS:
$50.00 spay deposit plus a $15.00 anti-rabies vaccination deposit.
$15.00 adoption fee plus $5.00 licensing fee.
For a total of$85.00 in fees and deposits.
MALE DOGS:
$40.00 neuter deposit plus a $15.00 anti-rabies vaccination deposit.
$15.00 adoption fee plus a $5.00 licensing fee.
For a total of$75.00 in fees and deposits.
FEMALE CATS:
$40.00 spay deposit plus $15.00 anti-rabies vaccination deposit.
$10.00 adoption fee.
For a total of$65.00 in fees and deposits.
MALE CATS:
$30.00 neuter deposit plus a $15.00 anti-rabies vaccination.
$10.00 adoption fee.
For a total of$55.00 in fees and deposits.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect ten days following its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward, Alaska, this 22 day
of October, 2001.
