HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes2001-169 I I I Sponsored by: Historic Preservation Commission CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2001-169 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, SUPPORTING THE ADOPTION OF STATE LEGISLATION RELATING TO A HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM FOR ALASKA HISTORY WHEREAS, House Bill No 171 was introduced in the 22nd legislature to develop an Alaska history education curriculum and require that students complete the curriculum as a requirement for high school graduation; and WHEREAS, an education rich in history and government is vital to the development of a representative democracy and a civil society, and knowledge of a person's own state history and government is fundamental to informed and effective participation in state and local affairs; and WHEREAS, an educated Alaska populace with a full appreciation for the history of Alaska will make better decisions for the good of all Alaska citizens, both rural and urban; and WHEREAS, Alaska schools are positioned to transmit knowledge of Alaska history to the majority of people who will inhabit Alaska in coming generations; and WHEREAS, the Seward Historic Preservation Commission recommended this resolution to the City Council for approval. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: Section 1. The Seward City Council supports the adoption of State legislation which provides for the development of a standards-based Alaska history education curriculum within grades 9 through 12, requires that students complete the curriculum as a requirement for high school graduation, and provides the Alaska school districts with the instructional and financial support needed to put an Alaska history curriculum in place. Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward, Alaska, this 10th day of December, 2001.
