A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION
COMMISSION, SUPPORTING THE SEWARD SENIOR CITIZENS, INC. PROJECT
TO RELOCATE THE SENIOR CENTER AND PROVIDE SENIOR CITIZEN
HOUSING AT THE JESSE LEE HOME
WHEREAS, The Jesse Lee Home has long been one of, it not the most, visible historic
structures in Seward; and
WHEREAS, with the assistance of a matching grant from the State Historic Preservation
Office, the Seward Historic Preservation Commission completed a National Register of Historic
Places Nomination for the Jesse Lee Home; and
WHEREAS, the 1985 Seward Comprehensive Plan encourages the preservation of
individual historic houses and commercial buildings and groups of historic structures; and
WHEREAS, the 1990 update notes that Seward derives part of its unique character from
its historic architecture and this character must be saved; and
WHEREAS, the Seward Senior Citizens, Inc. is pursuing grants for Historic Preservation
of the Jesse Lee Home buildings and site as well as funds through the Alaska Housing Finance
Corporation in order to relocate the Senior Center and provide senior housing; and
WHEREAS, there is a documented need for senior citizen housing in the Seward area;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation
Commission that:
Section 1. The Seward Historic Preservation Commission supports the Seward Senior
Citizens, Inc. project to acquire and renovate the Jesse Lee Home in order to relocate the Senior
Center and provide senior housing.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission this 18th
day of January, 1995.
