HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes1997-001 Sponsored by Staff CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION RESOLUTION NO. 2Z:!ll A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION, RECOMMENDING THAT THE ALASKA HISTORICAL COMMISSION AND THE U.S. BOARD ON GEOGRAPHIC NAMES OFFICIALLY NAME TIEHACKER MOUNTAIN, LOCATED APPROXIMATELY EIGHT MILES NORTHEAST OF SEWARD WITHIN TIN, RIW, SECTION 9, SEWARD MERIDIAN WHEREAS, the Alaska Historical Commission serves as the geographic names board for the State of Alaska; and WHEREAS, Tiehacker is the historical name of the 4,300 foot mountain located approximately eight miles northeast of Seward within Township 1 North, Range 1 East, Section 9, Seward Meridian; and WHEREAS, an International Geophysical Year marker is located at the apex of the mountain, dated 1957 and inscribed with the name Tiehacker; and WHEREAS, during the early days of the construction of what is now the Alaska Railroad, railroad ties were hand hewn from local trees; and WHEREAS, those who cut the railroad ties were called "tiehackers"; and WHEREAS, officially naming Tiehacker Mountain would serve as a perpetual reminder of the significant role railroading played in the history of the Seward area and provide a tribute to the tiehackers who helped build and maintain the railroads of the Seward area. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission that: Section 1. An application to officially name Tiehacker Mountain is hereby recommended to the Alaska Historical Commission for review and recommendation to the U. S. Board on Geographic Names. Section 2.
