HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes1997-002 Sponsored by Staff CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION RESOLUTION NO. 97-02 A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION, RECOMMENDING CITY COUNCIL AUTHORIZATION TO SUBMIT TO THE STATE OF ALASKA, DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, AN APPLICATION FOR A HISTORIC PRESERVATION FUND GRANT TO PROMOTE THE SEWARD REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES WHEREAS, pursuant to the National Park Service Historic Preservation Act of 1966, certain federal share matching grants for historic preservation projects are available to certified local governments; and WHEREAS, this years grant priority is for projects that, "increase public awareness of the value, meaning and importance of Alaska archaeological and historic resources," and "strengthen efforts to identify, designate, study, interpret and protect significant archaeological and historic resources;" and WHEREAS, the Seward Register of Historic Places was established by Ordinance No. 95-10, to provide for public recognition of local cultural resources worthy of preservation; and WHEREAS, the proposed grant project will serve to promote the Seward Register of Historic Places program and enhance community outreach and historical awareness; and WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of the Seward Historic Preservation Commission to work toward the continuing education of citizens regarding local historic preservation and community history. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission that: Section 1. It is hereby recommended that the City Council authorize the City Manager to submit an application to the State of Alaska for a federal historic preservation matching grant to promote the Seward Register of Historic Places program. Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. PASSED AND APPROVED by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission this 17th day of September, 1997.
