HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes1999-005 Sponsored by Staff CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION RESOLUTION NO. 99-05 A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION, RECOMMENDING THAT THE CITY COUNCIL PLACE THE JOHNSTON BUILDING ON THE SEWARD REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES WHEREAS, City Council Ordinance No. 95-10, established the Seward Register of Historic Places in order to locally recognize properties important in Seward's history; and WHEREAS, an application to place the Johnston Building on the Seward Register of Historic Places has been prepared for review and recommendation to the City Council; and WHEREAS, the Johnston Building was originally constructed as a private residence on Lots 29 and 30, Block 23, Original Townsite of Seward, in 1930 by Robert W. Johnston; and WHEREAS, Robert W. Johnston moved to Seward as a teenager in 1904, and homesteaded in the Bear Lake area, north of Seward in 1909; and WHEREAS, at the time of its construction in 1930, the building was one of very few located north of Lowell Creek, which until 1940 ran down Jefferson Street; and WHEREAS, the building is significant for its association with one of Seward's early pioneers, and the early development of the community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission that: Section 1. The Johnston Building is eligible for placement on the Seward Register of Historic Places as a property associated with historic events or persons of local and state significance. Section 2. It is hereby recommended that the City Council place the Johnston Building on the Seward Register of Historic Places. Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
