HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
RESOLUTION NO. 22:M
A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION
COMMISSION, RECOMMENDING THAT THE CITY COUNCIL PLACE
THE HOLLAND HOUSE ON THE SEWARD REGISTER OF HISTORIC
PLACES
WHEREAS, City Council Ordinance No. 95-10, established the Seward Register of
Historic Places in order to locally recognize properties important in Seward's history; and
WHEREAS, an application to place the Holland House on the Seward Register of Historic
Places has been prepared for review and recommendation to the City Council; and
WHEREAS, the Holland House, was constructed in 1905 on Lot 12, Block 25, Original
Townsite of Seward, by Murray B. Holland, general store keeper for the Alaska Central Railway;
and
WHEREAS, the Holland House is located within what is known as "Millionaires Row, "
a group of six homes built in 1905 on Third Avenue, between Madison and Jefferson Streets, by
and for Alaska Central Railway department heads; and
WHEREAS, the building is significant for its association with the founding of Seward, and
the development of the Alaska Central Railway.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation
Commission that:
Section 1. The Holland House is eligible for placement on the Seward Register of Historic
Places as a property associated with historic events or persons of local and state significance.
Section 2. It is hereby recommended that the City Council place the Holland House on
the Seward Register of Historic Places.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission this 21st
day of April, 1999.
