RESOLUTION NO. 2001 -04
A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION
COMMISSION, SUPPORTING A FY 2001 HISTORIC PRESERVATION
FUND DEVELOPMENT GRANT APPLICATION FOR THE EXTERIOR
RESTORA TION OF THE VAN GILDER HOTEL IN SEWARD
WHEREAS, the Alaska Office of History and Archaeology is accepting applications for 200 1
Historic Preservation Fund development project grants; and
WHEREAS, the intent of the grant program is to provide assistance to owners of National
Register of Historic Places properties to ensure the continued use and integrity of historic properties,
stimulate economic development through heritage tourism, and increase public awareness and
appreciation of Alaska's heritage; and
WHEREAS, the owner of the Van Gilder Hotel has prepared a grant application to restore
the exterior of the historic structure to its original construction and finish, including replacement of
most of the windows; and
WHEREAS, the Van Gilder Hotel in Seward, Alaska is listed on the National Register of
Historic Places for its association with persons and events which made a significant contribution to
local and State history; and because it possesses integrity of location, setting, materials and
workmanship that represents a distinguishable entity in Alaska's past, present and future; and
WHEREAS, the Seward Historic Preservation Plan supports the restoration and
rehabilitation of Seward's historic properties as identified in the following goals for historic
preservation:
Maintain the historic character of Seward while encouraging its development as a
commercial, cultural, and tourist center;
Ally historic preservation and economic development in Seward through the
promotion of heritage tourism and adaptive re-use of historic buildings and
structures; and
Identify and preserve the diverse aspects of Seward's history; buildings, sites,
structures, trails, landscapes, archives, transportation facilities, downtown district,
and artifacts.
