<br />Sponsored by: Staff <br /> <br />CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA <br />HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2001 -05 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE SEW ARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION <br />COMMISSION, SUPPORTING A FY 2001 HISTORIC PRESERVATION <br />FUND DEVELOPMENT GRANT APPLICATION FOR THE EXTERIOR <br />RESTORA TION OF THE BROWN AND HAWKINS STORE IN SEWARD <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Alaska Office of History and Archaeology is accepting applications for 200 I <br />Historic Preservation Fund development project grants; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the intent of the grant program is to provide assistance to owners of National <br />Register of Historic Places properties to ensure the continued use and integrity of historic properties, <br />stimulate economic development through heritage tourism, and increase public awareness and <br />appreciation of Alaska's heritage; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the owner of Brown and Hawkins Store has prepared a grant application to <br />complete an exterior restoration of the historic structure; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Brown and Hawkins Store in Seward, Alaska is listed on the National <br />Register of Historic Places for its significance as the oldest commercial enterprise still in the same <br />business at its original location. The Brown and Hawkins Store has been operated by members of <br />the Hawkins family since its establishment in 1903; <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Seward Historic Preservation Plan supports the restoration and <br />rehabilitation of Seward's historic properties as identified in the following goals for historic <br />preservation: <br /> <br />Maintain the historic character qf Seward Il'hile encouraging its development as a <br />commercial, cultural, and tourist center; <br /> <br />Ally historic preservation and economic development in Seward through the <br />promotion of heritage tourism and adaptive re-use (if historic buildings and <br />structures; and <br /> <br />Identify and preserve the diverse aspects of Seward's histmy; buildings, sites, <br />structures, trails, landscapes, archives, transportation facilities, downtown district, <br />and artifacts. <br />
