HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
RESOLUTION NO. 2001-06
A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION,
RECOMMENDING CITY COUNCIL AUTHORIZATION TO SUBMIT TO THE STATE
OF ALASKA, DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, AN APPLICATION FOR A
HISTORIC PRESERVATION FUND GRANT TO PLAN AND PRODUCE A SEWARD
CENTENNIAL SYMPOSIUM
WHEREAS, pursuant to the National Park Service Historic Preservation Act of1966, certain
federal share matching grants for historic preservation projects are available to certified local
governments; and
WHEREAS, in 2003 Seward will celebrate its centennial; and
WHEREAS, Seward's centennial presents an opportunity for community celebrations and
educational activities focused on the history of Seward; and
WHEREAS, the Seward Historic Preservation Commission proposes to apply for a historic
preservation matching grant to plan and produce a symposium that will provide the foundation event
of the Seward Centennial, 2003; and
WHEREAS, the total project cost is estimated at $25,850.00, with a federal share of
$15,510.00, and a local match of$10,340.00. The City's match for this project will be provided by
cash, in-kind, and donated goods and services; and
WHEREAS, an identified goal of the City of Seward Strategic Plan is to plan and celebrate
the Seward Centennial in 2003.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Historic Preservation
Commission that:
Section 1. It is hereby recommended that the City Council authorize the City Manager to
submit an application to the State of Alaska for a federal historic preservation matching grant to plan
and coordinate a Seward Centennial Symposium as the foundation event of Seward's centennial in
2003.
Section 2. It is further recommended that the City Council budget the funds necessary to
complete the Seward Centennial Symposium.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
