RESOLUTION 2004-03
A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, REQUESTING
COUNCIL SUPPORT AND APPROVAL OF COMMISSION PRIORITIES
WHEREAS, the Seward Historic Preservation Commission wishes to assist the City
Council with the ongoing responsibilities it holds as a Certified Local Government, which
requires provision for recognition of the historically significant activities, structures and the
people who helped build Seward; and
WHEREAS, the Commission has become very active over the past several years and has
helped emphasize community spirit and Seward's history by sponsoring numerous off-season
events supported and attended by local residents, visitors and guests; and
WHEREAS, a few of the events have been: the Seward Red Light District presentation
in 2002, the State of Alaska Historical Commission 2002 summer meeting; the Seward
Centennial Symposium in 2003; the First Friday Fireside Historical Lecture Series and the "Blast
from the Past" celebration in 2004; and
WHEREAS, the Commission has continuously received grants for historic preservation
activities, such as training for staff and commissioners in 2002 and 2004, the grant to present the
Seward Centennial Symposium, the Historic Structure Report for the Jesse Lee Home, the
production of a historic structure website in 2003 and the grant for updating the Seward Historic
Preservation Plan has been approved for 2004; and
WHEREAS, the Commission was proud to represent the community by receiving the
2003 Esther Billman Award of Excellence from the Alaska Historical Society for the outstanding
Seward Centennial programs; and
WHEREAS, the Commission provides recognition each year to an outstanding
contributor to Seward's history by awarding the annual Seward Historic Preservation Award; and
WHEREAS, in order for the Commission to continue to provide this level of service to
the community and assistance to the Council, a long range plan for activities is necessary; and
