HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes2004-004 Sponsored by: Staff CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION RESOLUTION NO. 2004-04 A RESOLUTION OF mE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMIS~, RECOMMENDING CITY COUNCIL AUTHORIZE mE CITY MANAbER TO SUBMIT TO THE STATE OF ALASKA, DEPARTMENT OF NA TURAL}~QURCES, AN APPLICATION FOR A HISTORIC PRESERVATION FUND G~~~T}JYHIRE A SPECIAL PROJECTS COORDINATOR FOR THE JESSE LEE HOME ,,/ WHEREAS, pursuant to the National Park Service Historic P~rvation Act of 1966, certain federal share matching grants for historic preservation projepts~available to certified local governments; and ~ WHEREAS, the Jesse Lee Home is on the NatiOnjl~~er of Historic Places and is one of the most notable historic structures in Seward an~~ one of the most frangible; and WHEREAS, The Jesse Lee Home ~~);tructure Report (2003) provides cost estimates for rehabilitation and the first phase 01 ~~ation should be stabilization; and WHEREAS, grants will be need~ rehabilitate the structure; and WHEREAS, a special proj~rdinator for the Jesse Lee Home could be hired to write grants, coordinate with the ~~ solicit the support of civic groups, and perform public outreach activities; and V\.I) WHEREAS, thes('i),pes of activities will highlight Seward's ongoing concerns for historic preservation.. ~\n'contribute to the rehabilitation ofthe Jesse Lee Home; and WHER~~e total project cost for a special projects coordinator is estimated at $33,333.00, ;iili"~~~ral share of $20,000.00, and a local match of $13,333.00. The City's match for ~}roject will be provided by cash, in-kind, and donated goods and services; and =@EREAS,theComprehenSiVeplan(1990)SUpportssaving historic buildings and the p . n of Seward's history and the Strategic Plan (1999) encourages the recognition, reha . itation and preservation of Historic Sites and Buildings and the Historic Preservation Plan (1996) emphasizes continuing the education of citizens regarding local history.
