RESOLUTION 2005-02
A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD HISTORIC PRESERVATION
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, STATEMENT OF
POSITION REGARDING THE PROPOSED VACATION OF
WASHINGTON STREET
WHEREAS, the National Park Service has applied for a vacation of a portion of
Washington Street to support the proposed Mary Lowell Center; and
WHEREAS, Seward Planning Commission has approved the vacation request and the
request will now be heard by the Kenai Peninsula Borough. If the vacation is approved, the
Seward City Council has a thirty day veto period, and
WHEREAS, the Seward Historic Preservation Commission wishes to make a
recommendation to the bodies which will be considering this action; and
WHEREAS, the Seward Historic Preservation Commission supports the historical
significance of the original grid pattern of the Original Townsite of Seward plat, notarized in
1905; and
WHEREAS, the Commission opposes the vacation of Washington Street and wishes to
preserve as much of the historic transportation grid as possible; and
WHEREAS, the Commission supports incorporating interpretation of the historic
significance of the original downtown Seward grid into the Mary Lowell Center.
