CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION
RESOLUTION NO. 26=OJ.
A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD PLANNING AND ZONING
COMMISSION, GRANTING A SIGN VARIANCE TO THE CITY
OF SEWARD FOR A SIGN ON THE ALLEY SIDE OF THE
COMMUNITY CENTER BUILDING
WHEREAS, the City of Seward Parks and Recreation Department has requested
permission to erect an additional sign on the side and back of the community center building
located at 336 Third Avenue to assist residents and visiting public in locating the center from other
than the front or side of the building; and
WHEREAS, in accordance with the Seward City Code, the Planning and Zoning
Commission is authorized to grant a variance in harmony with the general pUlpose and intent of
the code which includes: community aesthetics; commercial communication to the public;
protection and enhancement of the historic charm, natural beauty, visual character and identity of
the community; and flexibility for creative and innovative sign designs; and
WHEREAS, the variance request is within the spirit of the code to provide directions and
identify public buildings;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Planning and Zoning
Commission that:
Section 1. The City Clerk is hereby authorized to issue a sign variance to the City of
Seward Parks and Recreation Department to erect a wall sign on the east/back wall of the
community building with said sign consisting of a backing board measuring no more than 3 x 17
feet, painted the same color as the building and upon which cut-out, raised letters measuring no
more than two feet in height, spelling out the words, "TEEN & YOUTH CENTER", are attached.
Section 2. A sign permit must be applied for through the city building official to ensure
that the terms of the variance are followed and the sign is erected in a safe manner.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the Seward Planning and Zoning Commission this 3rd
day of April, 1996.
