CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 95-044
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, OFFICIALLY NAMING THE HISTORIC
PARK LOCATED AT 401 RAILWAY AVENUE WITHIN THE
UNRECORDED WATERFRONT TRACTS, HOBEN PARK
WHEREAS, the park located at 401 Railway Avenue has been identified as eligible for
the National Register of Historic Places as a designed landscape significant for its association
with Seward's early days of rail and boat traffic; and
WHEREAS, throughout its::!: 70 year history, the park has been referred to by various
names including Hoben Park, Arcade park, Nile Park, Ladies Garden/Park, Petrovich Park and
Iditarod Park; and
WHEREAS, it is essential that the park be officially named to establish an historic
landmark for residents and visitors of Seward, and to alleviate confusion during development of
the Waterfront area; and
WHEREAS, oral and written history document that Hedley "Harry" V. Hoben, former
mayor and businessman of Seward, was responsible for the park's existence by providing for the
construction and maintenance of the lot; and
WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Commission approved Resolution No. 95-02,
recommending that the park be officially named Hoben Park in recognition of the role Mr. Hoben
played in the park's and Seward's history;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The park located at 401 Railway Avenue, within the unrecorded Waterfront
Tracts of Seward, is hereby officially named Hoben park.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the city of Seward, Alaska, this 8th
day of May, 1995.
