CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 88-121
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALASKA, URGING THE GOVERNOR TO APPOINT
A RESIDENT OF SEWARD TO THE ALASKA RAILROAD BOARD
WHEREAS, due to the foresight of the founders of the
city of Seward in initiating construction of a railroad in
Seward, the federal government established what is now the
Alaska Railroad; and
WHEREAS, for more than sixty (60) years, Seward, as the
southern terminus of the Alaska Railroad, has played a vital
role in the economic development of ALaska's natural re-
sources; and
WHEREAS, products such as oilfield pipe, coal, timber,
building supplies, seafoods, fuels, vehicles and vans all
pass through the port of Seward via the Alaska Railroad; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Railroad and the Railroad Dock are
vital to the overall economic well being of this community;
and
WHEREAS, it is significant that Seward, the one commu-
nity in Alaska with the longest and most in-depth associa-
tion with the Alaska Railroad, is not represented on the
Alaska Railroad Corporation's Board of Directors; and
WHEREAS, there is currently a vacancy on the Alaska
Railroad Corporation's Board of Directors;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The City Council hereby endorses applica-
tions to serve on the Alaska Railroad Corporation's Board of
Directors as filed by Seward Residents Beverlv Dunham and
Linda Murphy.' "
Section 2. The Governor is strongly urged to give
favorable consideration to the above mentioned applicants
and is encouraged to appoint one of them to the vacancy
which has occurred on the Railroad Board.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immedi-
ately upon its adoption.
