CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 89-029
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALASKA, SETTING PRIORITIES FOR OIL
CONTAINMENT AND CONTAMINATION MITIGATION
WHEREAS, oil contamination from the Exxon Valdez accident in
Prince William Sound has occurred within Resurrection Bay; and
WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to assure that, to the
greatest extent possible, further contamination of the ci ty' s
coastline and streams is prevented; and
WHEREAS, oil containment and clean-up responsibilities have
been transferred to Exxon; and
WHEREAS, the U. S. Coast Guard has been charged with
monitoring Exxon's efforts;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The number one priority for the city of Seward
shall be the protection of the shoreline and critical fish habitats
within the city limits and, to the greatest extent possible, assure
that oil contamination of the city's beaches and streams does not
occur.
Section 2. Exxon officials and the U. S. Coast Guard are
urged to do everything possible to assure that the city's priority
as stated in Section No. 1 above is met.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, this 18th day of April, 1989.
