RESOLUTION NO. 84-101
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALASKA, REQUESTING THAT THE UNITED STATES
GOVERNMENT GRANT PORT OF ENTRY STATUS TO THE
CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
WHEREAS, the Port of Seward, situated midway between the Gulf
of Alaska and the Bering Sea fishing grounds, has for many years been a
regular port-of-call for supplies, crew changes, repairs, and recreation
for the Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese fishing vessels plying the North
Pacific waters; and
WHEREAS, the Port of Seward is rapidly assuming a position of
international importance in processing and shipping fish products, as
well as servicing the international and domestic fleets; and
WHEREAS, the Port of Seward has previously been designated as
a Port-of-call for the Polish fishing fleet; and
WHEREAS, regular shipments of coal from Alaska to the Republic
of Korea will be inaugurated in December of 1984, with such shipments
totaling 800,000 tons per year over the next fifteen years; and
WHEREAS, this breakthrough in the
Republic of Korea opens up a backhaul potential
cant savings to the Alaskan consumer; and

WHEREAS, the City of Seward is nearing the completion of the
Seward Marine Industrial Center--its focal point being a 3,000 ton
capacity shiplift to service the foreign and domestic fleets operating
off the coast of Alaska; and
WHEREAS, a large portion of the community is economically
dependent upon the fishing and transportation industries centered in
Seward and serving the international markets; and
WHEREAS, substantial costs are incurred in having United
States Customs and Immigration personnel travel to Seward each time a
foreign vessel calls on the Port of Seward; and
WHEREAS, the establishment of a Customs and Immigration Office
in Seward would be a financial savings to the United States Government
and better serve the needs of this growing port, the State of Alaska and
the United States of America;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:

RESOLUTION NO. 84-101
Section 1. The United States Government be requested to grant
Port of Entry status to the City and Port of Seward, Alaska, and estab-
lish a permanent U.S. Customs and Immigration station in Seward with
personnel authorized to fulfill the functions of both agencies.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its adoption.
