CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 85-19
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALASKA, REQUESTING THAT THE CITY OF SEWARD
BE GRANTED STATUS AS HONORARY HOME PORT OF THE USS ALASKA
WHEREAS, the United States Navy has christened the latest
Trident nuclear submarine the USS Alaska; and
WHEREAS, the Port of Seward is an ice-free, deep water port
located 16 miles inland from the Gulf of Alaska, on the North end of
Resurrection Bay; and
WHEREAS, the Port of Seward has historically played an
important role in the United States Costal Defense System; and
WHEREAS, the Port of Seward is proud that a Naval submarine
carries the name of our great state Alaska; and
WHEREAS, the Port of Seward sends an open invitation to the
Captain and crew of the USS Alaska to join our community and allow
Seward to show it's gratitude to those protecting our country;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The United States Navy, Governor Bill Sheffield,
State of Alaska, and Major General Edward G. Pagano, Chairman USS Alaska
Committee, are hereby requested to grant status to the City and Port of
Seward, Alaska, as the honorary home port of the Trident submarine USS
Alaska.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its adoption.
