CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 84-11
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALASKA, WELCOMING SEAWAY EXPRESS AND THE WOECK
FAMILY OF BUSINESSES TO SEWARD
HHEREAS, the Woeck family has formed a new company known as
Seaway Express; and
WHEREAS, Seaway Express plans to provide scheduled weekly
barge service between Seattle and Seward; and
WHEREAS, Seward has the opportunity to resume its historical
role as the transportation port for Southcentral and Interior Alaska;
and
WHEREAS, Seaway Express has pledged 60 million private dollars
to bring about this new venture;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
Section 1. The City Council of Seward welcomes and supports
this new venture by the Woeck family because:
a. Seward residents believe we have the marine transporta-
tion physical features which should make us a shipping
hub;
b. This new carrier would provide lower costs for goods to
Seward residents as well as our friends on the Kenai
Peninsula and in Interior Alaska, and provide new compe-
tition which will benefit all of Alaska;
c. This new venture would create new permanent jobs in our
community; and
d. This provides a new marine transportation industry which
is consistent with our future plans for what we would
like our community to become.
Section 2. Copies of this resolution shall be forwarded to
Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Stan Thompson, North Star Borough Mayor
Bill Allen, Municipality of Anchorage Mayor Tony Knowles and Alaska
Railroad General Manager Frank Jones.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its adoption.
