A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING ASSIST TUGS AND
ESCORT VESSELS IN THE SEWARD AREA (Wille)
Wh eas, the residents of City of Seward rely upon the
employment pportunities and businesses located on the waterfront within
the city limits.

Whereas, Larg motor vessels are not fail safe and incidents
involving these vessels ar not uncommon.
Whereas, Most of th oreign flagged ships currently calling on the
Port of Seward do not use assist d escort vessels, with the exception of
one of the major cruise lines.
Whereas, The United States Coast Guard does not require the
reporting or documenting of "close calls near misses."
Whereas, Several incidents, collisi s and casualties have been
reported in the city of Seward limits and the sta of Alaska.
Whereas, The City of Seward, its business and its citizens would
endure substantial economic hardships if any of thes local facilities were
substantially damaged.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE
COMMERCE ADVISORY BOARD:
Section 1. The board recognizes the importance of intact pier fa . ities to
local waterfront businesses and the employment they provide.
Section 2. The City of Seward suggests that foreign flagged ships over
500 gross ton use assist tugs and escort vessels.

Section 3. Th, board requests that the Seward City Council pass a similar
resolution. \
