RESOLUTION NO. 2001-004
A RESOLUTION OF THE SEWARD PORT AND COMMERCE ADVISORY
BOARD, SUPPORTING AND RECOMMENDING CITY COUNCIL
SUPPORT OF THE SEWARD AIRPORT IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT
WHEREAS, the State Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is nominating the
Seward Airport Improvement Project to the State Transportation Improvement Program; and
WHEREAS, the project consists of reconstructing the crosswind runway in order to remove
stumps that are pushing through the surface; and providing spot improvements to the main runway to
remove stumps and address erosion problems created by Resurrection River on the north side ofthe
runway; and
WHEREAS, the proposed project will address existing safety hazards for aircraft operating
at the airport, and protect the airport from structural damage caused by Resurrection River erosion;
and
WHEREAS, the Seward 201 0 Comprehensive Plan's transportation element states that there
is a need to continue to operate the Seward Airport in an efficient and safe manner that meets the
expected demand for Seward air service; and
WHEREAS, improving Seward's State Airport is identified as a goal of the City's 1999
Strategic Plan which specifically supports developing a flood mitigation project to protect the
runway from flooding; and
WHEREAS, maintaining a safe and efficient airport facility is in the best interest of the
aircraft operators, residents, visitors, State of Alaska, and City of Seward.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Seward Port and Commerce Advisory
Board that:
Section 1. The Seward Port and Commerce Advisory Board hereby supports the Seward
Airport Improvements Project sponsored by the State Department of Transportation and Public
Facilities, and further recommends City Council support of the project.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the Seward Port and Commerce Advisory Board this 5th
day of September, 2001.
