HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrd2002-004 I I I Sponsored by: Janke Introduction Date: July 22, 2002 Public Hearing Date: August 12,2002 Enactment date: August 12,2002 CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA ORDINANCE 2002-04 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, AMENDING SEWARD CITY CODE, TITLE 3 PERSONNEL, CHAPTER 3.45 ANNUAL LEAVE TO CHANGE THE NUMBER OF REQUIRED ANNUAL LEAVE HOURS THAT MUST BE TAKEN YEARLY AND TO ALLOW FOR BEREAVEMENT LEAVE WHEREAS, current city code requires a minimum number of hours of annual leave that must be taken each year; and WHEREAS, the amount of hours required does not allow employees to accumulate a sufficient leave balance for illness or other emergency leaves; and WHEREAS, the city code currently requires annual leave to also be used for bereavement leave; and WHEREAS, the administration, department heads and wage committee have researched this issue and support the proposed changes. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: strike out = deletion bold italics = additions Section 1. Seward City Code is amended to read as follows: TITLE 3 PERSONNEL Chapter 3.45. Annual Leave 3.45.040. Annual leave use C. Amount ofleave which must be taken yearly. 1. The minimum numbers of hours of annual leave that must be taken yearly are as follows: a. For personnel employed up to three years, eighty forry hours ofleave must be used; b. For personnel employed from three to six years, one lumdred sixry hours of leave must be used; c. For personnel employed six years or more, one hundred twenty eighry hours of CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA ORDINANCE 2002-04 leave must be used. d. These limitations shall not apply to new employees until July 1 ofthe second calendar year following date of hire. 2. It shall be the responsibility of the department head to see that each employee under his supervision has taken the minimum annual hours ofleave required by this section. The department head shall provide in writing to the city manager the reasons an employee in his department failed to take the minimum annual leave hours required. Such letter shall be made a part ofthe personnel file of the employee in question. F. Death in immediate family. Annual leave may be llsed upon the death of m.embers of the immediate family of the employee. Regular employees shall be entitled to a bereavement leave of five days for use upon the death of members of the immediate family limited to one time per calendar year. Leave without pay up to an additional five days will be granted and may be extended with approval by the city manager. As related to this section, "immediate family" means the following: spouse, father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, grandfather and grandmother (including adopted, step or foster, but NOT in-laws).
