HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes2009-030Sponsored by: Oates CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2009-030 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, SUPPORTING SEWARll POLICE DF,YARTMENT 'RECOVERY ACT: OFFICE OF JUSTICE PROGRAMS: OFFICE OF JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUINCY PRF,VENTION FY 09 NATIONAL YOUTH MEN'CORING PROGRAMS" APPLICATION IN THE AMOUNT OF 520,000 WHEREAS, The American Recovery and Rcim~estment Act (ARRA) of 2009 is intended by Congress to stimulate the American economy; and WHEREAS, appropriations have been made to federal agencies through the ARRA in order to help stimulate local economies: and WHEREAS, ARRA presents the City of Seward and Seward Police Department with the opportunity io apply for granted funding, with no match required; and WHEREAS, the Seward Police Department currently has strong DARE, Youth Court, and Junior Police Academy Programs through which local youth mentoring „_ opportunities could be expanded upon; and WHEREAS, the need exists within the community for an incentive based mentoring program that may be a combined effort of these existing programs; and WHEREAS, the Department of Justice, Office ofJustice Programs, Juvenile Justice, and Delinquency Prevention program has $44 million in fiutding available through competitive grants; and WHEREAS, the Recovery Acl: Office of .Tustice Programs: Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention FY 09 National Youth Mentoring Programs grant application is due on April 20, 2009. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: Section 1: The Seward City Council recognizes the need for strong youth mentoring programs within the community. CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2009-030 Section 2: The Seward City Council supports the Seward Police Departments' application through the Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Competitive Grant for $20,000. Section 3: This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward Alaska this day 13"' day of April, 2009. "There is $ 33 million in funding available nationwide through this program, with no match requirement If awarded funds will be used to expand upon existing strong Drug Abuse Resistance F',ducation (DARE) program, Youth Court, and Junior Police Academy with an incentive based mentoring focus, potentially culminating in a trip to the Alaska Department of Public Safety Academy for outstanding cadets.
