Council Agenda Statement
Meeting Date: December 8, 2003
Through: Phil Shealy, City Manager
Malcolm Brown, Planner
From: Donna Glenz, Planning Assistant
Agenda Item: Nomination to Place the Woodlawn Cemetery on the Seward Register of
Historic Places
BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION:
Seward Register of Historic Places
The was established by City Council Ordinance 95-10, in order
to recognize properties that were important in Seward's history, help change the way the community
perceives its historic resources, and encourage private citizens and public officials to preserve these
resources.
An application to place the Woodlawn Cemetery on the local register was recently submitted to the
Historic Preservation Commission. The cemetery is located just north of the City Limits of Seward
on Block 2, Stewart Subdivision of Old Martin Homestead. The parcel is owned by the City of
Seward and is currently being restored by volunteers.
In accordance with the Commission's established nomination procedure, a copy of the Woodlawn
Cemetery local register application was forwarded to the Resurrection Bay Historical Society. The
Resurrection Bay Historical Society supported one change to the application in item F. Period and
Statement of Significance: The addition suggested was “Many of Seward’s earliest residents are
buried here or were originally buried here, including some who lived on Resurrection Bay before
Seward was founded.” Following review of the application and the recommendation, the Historic
Preservation Commission supported the change to the application.
At their October 19, 2003 meeting the Historic Preservation Commission unanimously approved
Resolution 2003-04, supporting the placement of the Woodlawn Cemetery on the Seward Register of
Historic Places.
