HomeMy WebLinkAbout05132019 City Council Laydown - Tom Clemons /9O ( 3 To Seward City Council, I would like to do a small lay down for you in reference to the crime and drugs in the community. Since the passing of SB91,the task of being a police officer has become even more complicated. SB91 made it so that most arrestee's do not enter the jail system after arrest. They get arrested and booked but then sign a "promise to appear" form and are released. Not only do they fail to appear but they continue their activity after their release. Warrants are issued by the court when they fail to appear,we arrest them, and the court lets them right back out to continue to not appear and commit more crimes. So, it appears that the crime rate has gone up for both Seward PD and the troopers but in fact we are dealing with the same suspects. There is a current bill in the legislature to lessen the impact of SB91. But last Friday, I learned that other legislators have added on other items to the bill that will lessen the impact of this bill so it appears it will not get on the floor this session, so we will still be in the dilemma we are today. Your police department and the troopers work hard to not only reduce crime but to do proper investigations to make the arrest and make sure that they are ready for the District Attorney for prosecution.
