Brown, Planner Agenda Item: The Historic Preservation Commission’s “Blast from the Past”, May 8, 2004 BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION: The Seward Historic Preservation Commission would like to host an event called the “Blast from the Past” during National Historic Preservation Week. The event will take place on May 8, 2004 and will feature both a parade with vintage cars followed by a street dance in front of Brown & Hawkins. The parade will start at the Harbor and go to the Downtown area. This will emphasize Seward’s commitment to historic preservation. These activities will highlight the historic reconstruction efforts done at the Brown & Hawkins building and will acknowledge Seward’s contribution to the transportation history of Alaska. As Seward is commonly known as “The Gateway to Alaska”, highlighting vintage cars seems very appropriate. Car clubs from out of town are hoping to participate in the parade and the festivities. The theme will encourage wearing clothes associated with the age of the cars in the parade. This project will continue to raise awareness of Seward’s history and the need to preserve it. This event will be beneficial to the visitor industry and will raise community spirit. The fact that the event will be happening in the off season will continue to enhance Seward’s image as a progressive community in the visitor industry. The City Parks and Recreation Department will also be hosting a Bike Rodeo downtown during May 8, 2004 from 10:00 to 12:00. Holding these events on the same day is another benefit to the community, as it provides a broader menu of exciting attractions for both visitors and locals. CONSISTENCY CHECKLIST: Yes No 1.
