CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 80- 52
A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE OPENING OF RESURRECTION BAY
TO SUBSISTENCE GILL NETTING OF SALMON
WHEREAS, Resurrection Bay now enjoys some of the finest salt
water salmon fishing available to sportsmen anywhere in Alaska, These
excellent fishing conditions are due to the hard work and careful plan-
ning by the State Sport Fishing Division as well as area business groups
and the local Chamber of Commerce, and
WHEREAS, Resurrection Bay is used heavily by recreational boats
and, in combination with the sports fishermen, these recreational users
of the Bay provide an integral part of Seward's economy, and
WHEREAS, local sport fishermen in the area can use the eight
miles of shoreline to harvest as many salt water salmon as they wish in
almost any manner using sports gear as long as they observe the six
salmon per day limit, and
WHEREAS, early runs of King Salmon as well as further enhance-
ment of the chum run are being attempted through efforts of the State
and local sports fishing groups, and
WHEREAS, Resurrection Bay has never been open to multi-species
gill netting and there does not appear the need to institute such an
opening now, and
WHEREAS, opening Resurrection Bay to subsistence gill netting
would greatly interfere with the current recreational use of the Bay and
could, therefore, have a serious detrimental impact on Seward's economy, and
WHEREAS, subsistence gill netting in the Bay would also upset the
balance of the current salmon runs and in all probability cancel any success-
ful efforts to enhance present and additional species runs;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that the State of Alaska Board of Fisheries be notified
of the City's strong objection to the consideration of any and all proposals
to open Resurrection Bay to subsistence gill netting of salmon,
PASSED AND APPROVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD,
ALASKA, this 8th day of December , 1980.
