My name is Susan Lang and I live outside the city limits.
Mr. Mayor, Council, Administration, Citizens of Seward and the greater
Resurrection Bay area.
I am the volunteer coordinator for the Friends of Jesse Lee Home.
As you may know, the deadline for completion of the tasks at Jesse Lee Home is
due this Friday, August 30, 2019.
We will not be able to meet the deadline.
That said, this is what has been accomplished in the past year by dedicated
volunteers, some from Colorado Outward Bound as well as residents from around
Alaska, who have provided hundreds of hours of work in the past 18 months.
1. Volunteers have painted over 95% of the graffiti that marred the exterior of
the building.
2. Volunteers have garnered donations of lilac bushes from a nursery in
Soldotna which have been planted on the south side of the building and are
thriving.
3. The exterior fence has been repaired, and we continue to maintain its
integrity.
4. We have routine patrols of the exterior and interior of the building, all
trespassers are referred to law enforcement.
5. Plans for the sewer line are ready for approval and construction.
6. Water line plans are in the works and will be ready by Spring 2020.
7. The Seward Public Works Department and the Building Inspector have been
most helpful with reviewing the plans for the project and offering their
expertise to this project.
8. A fundraiser was recently held to raise funds to buy materials to cover the
roof for the coming winter. Those funds have already doubled with a match
from an out-of-state grantor, and an additional matching grant is being
considered.
9. We are actively working with the State of Alaska Departments of Labor and
Education on developing the end use of the building - a statewide charter
school - which will be a feeder for AVTEC. The Dunleavy Administration is
very supportive and invested in the success of this project.
According to Item 5.b.4 of the Purchase and Sale Agreement, dated 7/28/2014 and
I quote:
"If, despite Buyer's reasonable efforts, Buyer has initiated the Work but not
been able to complete the Work by the end of the Due Diligence Period,
Buyer and Seller may confer to discus and negotiate an extension to the
Due Diligence Period, which may be reasonably necessary for the Buyer,
making commercially reasonable efforts, to complete the Work"
The Friends of the Jesse Lee Home have sent the city manager a formal
request to "confer" with the Seller for a 1-year extension.
We look forward to your favorable response to this request by directing the city
manager to negotiate with us over the terms.
Thank you for your consideration.
