CALL TO ORDER
The May 16, 2019 regular meeting of the Historic Preservation Commission was called to
order at 7:36 p.m.by Chair Wolfgang Kurtz.
OPENING CEREMONY
Tanguy Libbrecht led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Friends of the Jesse Lee Home—Iris Darling said the Friends of the Jesse Lee Home were
working very hard to get the language changed in the$1,000,073 grant for the Jesse Lee Home.They
wanted the grant to be used for the restoration, rather than demolition, of the Jesse Lee Home. In
response to Kurtz, Darling said the Friends of the Jesse Lee Home had the money lined up to
complete the restoration of the Jesse Lee Home. In response to Darling, City Manager Scott
Meszaros said the grant was for remediation of the building,not restoration or demolition,and that
would be the City Council's decision to make.
Resurrection Bay Historical Society—Sue Ward joined the Resurrection Bay Historical
Society and attended their April and May 2019 meetings. At the April meeting, two peaks were
named Mt. Mary and Mt. Santa Ana. At the May meeting,they discussed getting a sponsor for the
reprint of the book, The Road We Traveled.

Mapping Project—Historical Properties—None
Rockwell Kent Centennial— Sue Ward said she met with Doug Capra, who stated that
2020 was the 50th anniversary of Rockwell Kent's death and he felt it should be celebrated.The June
issue of Alaska Magazine will have an article about Rockwell Kent. There would be a Rockwell
Kent display at the Seward Library&Museum.

Other New Business
Discuss and decide what the CLG grant will be used for.
This was discussed at the work session and there was no further discussion on this topic.
Discuss the upcoming election of Chair and Vice Chair.
In response to Kurtz,Executive Liaison GeNeil Flaherty said no applications for Chair or
Vice Chair had been turned in and the deadline was May 17,2019.The election for Chair and Vice
Chair was scheduled for the September meeting unless there was a Special Meeting scheduled before
then.

Discuss upcoming work sessions and regular meetings.

Maxwell thanked everyone for a great meeting.
Darling thanked Libbrecht for his hard work on the CLG grant.She welcomed City Manager
Scott Meszaros.
Seese thanked Maxwell for taking on the minutes and Flaherty for her efforts. She thanked
Libbrecht for his hard work on the CLG grant and sharing his expertise with Seward. She welcomed
City Manager Scott Meszaros.
Libbrecht was excited to be working with a commission who valued historical importance.
Cobble thanked Flaherty for her efforts. She looked forward to continuing to have productive
work sessions and meetings. She thanked her fellow commissions and said she looked forward to
continuing to have productive work sessions and meetings.
Ward thanked Flaherty for her efforts and welcomed City Manager Scott Meszaros.
Kurtz thanked everyone for their time and efforts.
CITIZENS COMMENTS—None
COMMISSION AND ADMINISTRATION RESPONSE TO CITIZENS'
Flaherty said she enjoyed working with the commission and apologized for not being better
prepared for this meeting. She thanked Maxwell for her help.

Meszaros said the commission's current projects were similar to projects he was a part of in
Colorado and he offered the commission his resources.
Kingsland was excited to see a full commission. She welcomed City Manager Scott
Meszaros.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:26 p.m.
