City Council Agenda Statement
Meeting Date: March 29, 2022 (Special Meeting)
To: City Council
Through: Janette Bower, City Manager
From: Jason Bickling, Community Development Director
Agenda Item: Resolution 2022-047: Authorizing the City Manager to Waive Provisions in
the Seward City Code 7.15.010 and 15.10.226, for the Alaska Sea Life
Center, in Order to Accommodate the Need for Onsite Volunteer Camp
Spots
Background and justification:
In past years, the city has provided the Alaska Sea Life Center with a number of municipal
camping spots at a reduced rate to provide housing for volunteers.
With the housing shortage that the community is struggling with, these spots may need to be
used for city employees. In addition, with each spot that is provided to any organization, the city
loses revenue on the full value of that camp spot.
The Alaska Sea Life Center has requested permission to have four volunteer camp spots on a
portion of their own property adjacent to the current Iditarod Campground.
This resolution gives the City Manager the formal ability to give that permission by waiving the
provisions in City Code.
