City Council Agenda Statement
Meeting Date: May 9, 2022
To: City Council
From: Janette Bower, City Manager
Agenda Item: Determine the location for the new Public Works facility
Background and justification:
Since 1984, relocation of the Public Works Facility has been discussed by City Staff, the
Planning and Zoning Commission, the Seward City Council, and the entire Seward
community. Various locations have been proposed over the years, but the project has failed
to move forward. With the increase in demand for residential development and lack of
housing, the current facility is especially valuable to the community for conversation to
housing purposes. The highest and best use of the space that the current facility resides
upon is for residential development. Additionally, the current facility is beyond its useful life
and the needs of the community regarding Public Works operations are not being met due
to the capacity limitations of the current facility.
City Administration requests a determination from the City Council on where to construct a
new Public Works facility.
Public Works Property Evaluation:

River Bridges and on the West Side of Resurrection Bay.
Tier 2 definition: Meets the 4-acre requirement and south of the Resurrection River
Bridges and on the West Side of Resurrection Bay but NOT owned by the City.
