OFFICE OF THE
I would like to nominate the entire 2022 Historic Preservation Commission akh'6 Qtbf<Seward for
their outstanding efforts this past year. Under the devoted leadership and organizational skills of
Chairman Cheryl Seese, the commission has accomplished their goals and embellished the importance
of history for generations to come by way of accomplishing The Seward Historic Walking Tour.
Together, the commission completed the CLG grant application, and The State of Alaska awarded The
City of Seward funding to create a walking tour of significant historic sites within Seward's Downtown
Historic District. The commission, along with staff, personally reached out to the residents and business
owners to establish the sign locations, while simultaneously educating and creating a sense of pride for
Seward's history. They involved Seward's service clubs and other other organizations in this project to
enhance the historic beauty that has attracted visitors worldwide. Collaboratively, the group created
and distributed brochures and had informational signage made. This project has allowed locals and
visitors the opportunity to learn about Seward's natural beauty and its historic importance to The State
of Alaska as well as The United States! This Commission must be recognized for its professional efforts
and performance in completing the grant requirements that have brought a plethora of awareness to
Sewar's history.
The Commission has also been the primary caretaker of Hoben Park. The commissioners have planted
flowers in the urns, kept them watered, and kept the park free of debris so the Seward residents and
visitors alike can enjoy this little jewel.
Currently, the commissioners are working on a Historic Preservation Booklet. This booklet is intended to
educate residents and business owners how important it is to preserve our history by preserving the
look and feel of The Historic Downtown District. The Booklet will teach property owners the advantages
of preserving their properties and how to do this economically while enhancing their property values.
Each of these Commissioners have played a valuable role in making this past year one of the best for
Seward's history and need to be honored: Commission Chairman Cheryl Seese, Commissioner Sue
Ward, Commissioner Tanguy Libbrect, Commissioner Mary Ann Benoit, Commissioner Dona Walker and
Commissioner Art Le Master.
Sincerely,
Iris Darling

OFFICE OF THE
I would like to nominate Cheryl Seese and Gary Seese for their outstanding devotion, service anns CLERK
continued interest in enhancing and protecting the historic significance of the entire community of
Seward.
They have continuously worked with the owners of the property owners of the many properties which
have been placed on the Alaska Historic Register and those also honored by being selected for the
National Historic Register.
Both have served on commissions to provide their experience and expertise to the Seward community.
Gary was a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission for seven and a half years attending almost
every meeting. He contributed his architectural knowledge to the commission, which many home
owners appreciated!
Both, by Cheryl's lead, have planted and maintained the flower urns in Hoben Park for four summers;
many days having to water daily. They fill four one -gallon jugs of water from home and haul them to the
park, fertilizing as needed and spending the time necessary to keep the flowers looking good.
Cheryl has served on the Seward Historic Preservation Commission for four years missing only one
meeting. For most of her time she has served as Chair. She has worked tirelessly to prepare materials for
each meeting to keep the commission moving forward to accomplish great work for the community.
To date her favorite project has been the CLG Historic Signage around Seward. Commissioners, Tanguy
Libbrect, Sue Ward, Mary Ann Benoit, and Cheryl accomplished this wonderful project; the work
occurred throughout 2020-2021. its narration and photos of Seward's early history are not merely for
tourists but perhaps more importantly for the education of Seward's own residents! Locals are thrilled
to read about their community's history.
Gary and Cheryl love Seward and they want to be a positive part of advancing and protecting the great
city of Seward. As both have shared with me, they are grateful they had the opportunity to serve. I am
glad to know both and appreciate all their efforts. As Seward knows, with my own work to preserve
Brown and Hawkins, I love history and especially Seward's history.
