Thank you for the invitation to update your Commission regarding the progress of our SPRD Master Plan. You will note we have several drafts of various documents to use as addendum to the draft Master Plan. The Seward Recreation Committee is beginning in its third year of work. Within their mission"to conceive, compile and advance recreation opportunities in the Seward area,"they have tasked themselves with the review of the SPRD Master Plan. We enjoyed a productive meeting last November to discuss seven park areas, identifying strengths and improvement areas as noted. The group has since been plagued by lack-of-quorum, but intends to complete the final remaining parks, cemeteries and ballfields areas tomorrow, Wednesday,February 4 at 12 noon in the Rec Room. (Please find their work [to date] attached.(Your attendance and participation is welcomed!) As always, the SPRD staff engages in various planning activities each January as part of our annual staff In-Service. Find the SWOT{Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities&Threats) analysis attached for your review to gain a sense of how your parks and recreation professional wish to work into the fixture. You have been aware that our fanner Parks Operations Supervisor was tasked with creating a Parks Maintenance Inventory plan, which is attached. It has since been amended somewhat into a Maintenance Plan, but remains in draft form. You have are also provided a copy of our draft Integrated Pest Management Plan, which aims to safely improve turf and vegetation health while reducing unwanted plants such as dandelion, pushki and devil's club in recreation spaces. Another guideline is our memorials plan, for folks who wish to commemorate their loved ones' lives via a park bench, monument or plaque. This document requires an update, as well. Finally, attached is a new document. Gardeners' Guide, 1 referencing our dozen or so micro gardens or adopt-a-parks planting and care. This booklet boasts helpful maps and photos. Moving forward,SPIED will require time to consolidate the comments into a plan for your review. At some point this spring, we should bring a draft to your meeting for recommendation to the City Council. Before July 4, 2015, we hope to have our plan in final format to present to the City Council for adoption and inclusion into your new Comprehensive Plan.
