Purpose
Seward is unique. A small town on the ocean in a beautiful setting with much of its
historic downtown still intact, and on the road system!
The purpose of this document is to provide owners of historic buildings and homes
with guidelines on how to maintain their properties. These guidelines are intended to
provide a source of information and ideas to aid owners of historical properties.
This document can also be used to get that historic "Seward look" while using
modern materials in new construction or a remodel.
Over the years, Seward's economy has changed from longshoring and fishing to
tourism. Tourism is likely to continue growing and become even more dominant in
our economy. By preserving our historical properties, we will build on and strengthen
what makes Seward unique and has to offer.
The motto of National Trust for Historic Preservation (a privately funded
nonprofit organization focused on saving American's historic places) is "People
Saving Places." For Seward, we suggest that this is backwards, and our motto
should be "Places Serving People" since the best way to preserve a historical
property is to have people living and working in it to support their families.
Without people a historic building is heading toward demolition.
Preserving our historical properties and our "Seward look" is good for business.
In turn, businesses support families and healthy families make for a thriving
community!
