Update From the Seward Electric Department
7/19/2024
The recent cutover at the Fort Raymond Substation has successfully energized a new
transformer, marking a significant milestone in our ongoing effort to upgrade from a 69KV to
a 115KV system. This advancement is crucial for enhancing our electrical infrastructure.
However, following the cutover, the city experienced two systemwide outages due to a
technical issue with the new configuration. I am pleased to report that these issues have
been addressed and resolved, ensuring stable and reliable service moving forward.
Alongside the work at Fort Raymond, our crews have been diligently installing new services,
keeping up with locate requests, and conducting routine maintenance activities. The
increase in requests for new services has kept our Field Engineer particularly busy, as she
designs the new services, provides estimates, and coordinates with the line crew to
execute the work.
Looking ahead, the next projects at the Fort Raymond Substation include upgrading the fire
protection system and installing a radiator hood above the radiators. These improvements
aim to enhance safety for our operators, especially during the harsh winter months.
Additionally, our entire team has been working tirelessly to prepare the budget for the
upcoming cycle, ensuring that we allocate resources effectively to meet the city's growing
needs. The dedication and hard work of our team is instrumental in maintaining and
improving our electrical infrastructure, and their efforts are greatly appreciated.
