HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES2025-046 Airport - DELETEDDELETED FROM AGENDA Sponsored by: Mayor McClure CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA RESOLUTION 2025-046 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, REQUESTING TO NAME THE AIRPORT AT SEWARD, ALASKA THE LENNY GILLILAND SEWARD AIRPORT WHEREAS, Lenny Gilliland was a longtime Seward resident, graduating from Seward High School; and WHEREAS, Lenny was the Commander of the Seward Civil Air Patrol and active in civil defense work; and WHEREAS, was the Alaska Steamship Company Assistant Agent in Seward since 1959 and was promoted to Superintendent in 1964; and WHEREAS, Lenny was killed in a helicopter crash out of Whittier in 1964, after the Good Friday earthquake; and and WHEREAS, in 1964 the Seward Civil Air Patrol attempted to name the airport after him; WHEREAS, Lenny is buried at the Pioneer section of Seward's cemetery; and WHEREAS, the board of the Resurrection Bay Historical Society voted unanimously to support naming our airport after him; and WHEREAS, passage of this Resolution would show further support from our elected body to continue the naming process. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that: Section 1. The City Council of the City of Seward recommends renaming the Seward Airport to the Lenny Gilliland Seward Airport. Section 2. Upon passage this will be forwarded to DOT to continue the public process of renaming an airport. Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption. PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Seward, Alaska this 12th day of May 2025.
