THE CITY OF SEWARD. ALASKA
RESOLUTION NO. 772
WHEREAS. the existing Alaska Marine Highway System does not provide a con-
necting link between Seattle and Southcentral Alaska. and
WHEREAS. inmlnerable tourists have voiced complaints on the absence of such
a link, and
WHEREAS. it is believed that the existence of a Marine Highway link from
Southoentral Alaska to the Southeastern Marine Highway System would sub-
stantially increase the total traffic on the whole Alaska system by making
it unnecessary for touri s ts to "backtrack" from South centra 1 Alaska to
Haines or. probably which occurs most often. make their return trip via the
Canadian portion of the Alaska Highway; and the existence of such a link
would provide new and different scenery and would make a round-trip on the
Marine Highway IIIOre desirable. and
WHEREAS. the Port of Seward. Alaska. offers the best all-weather year-round
transfer point in Southcentral Alaska and a tenninal point of tourist travel
in Southoentral Alaska. and
WHEREAS. the Alaska Steamship Company tenninated its servioe to Seward and
Southcentral Alaska on January 23. 1969. and
WHEREAS. Hydrotrain ships carry most all other cOlllllOdities which fonnerly
came through Seward to the Port of Whittier.
NOW. THEREFORE. BE IT RESOLVED. by the COIlIIIOn Council of the City of Seward.
Alaska. that. the Honorable Keith H. Miller. Governor of the State of Alaska.
the Honorable members of the Legislature. and Harold D. Strandberg. Commissioner.
Department of Public Works. are requested to take action to establish and
maintain a route of the Alaska Marine Highway System between Seward. Alaska
and Seattle. Washington. or a connecting route between Seward and Juneau. Alaska.
This Resolution shall be effective upon the date of its passage and approval.
Passed and approved by The City Council of The City of Seward. Alaska. this
26th day of January. 1970.
